4th Diagnostic - [Voice/Action]

[Today B'Elanna is at the Battle Dome, putting the finishing touches on several of the programs she's created. She's been working on this for some time, and now she's ready to make her announcement to the rest of the village.]

For those that don't know me, I'm B'Elanna Torres. In my world I'm an engineer on a starship, and we have rooms similar to those in the Battle Dome, called holodecks. Programming holoprograms also happens to be one of my specialties.

Since I came here to Luceti I've been programming several of my own simulations from back... "home." I'm making them available for anyone who wants to use them.

They include a handful of holonovels where you can pick a character to play and interact with other characters in a story. Like one of Harry's favorites, Beowulf.

[Yes, she made that one just for you, Harry. Oh the memories.]

There's even a couple for the kids: The Adventures of Flotter and Toby the Targ.

I've also created a Klingon battle simulation, a couple recreational destinations including a tropical resort and French bistro, and orbital skydiving. Also, I've programmed some games that Harry and I can teach you how to play like Parrises Squares, Hoverball, and Velocity.

And if anyone is curious to know what a starship looks like, I've recreated all the main decks of Voyager.

And that's about it. You can find them listed under Torres. Some of them might still need a little tweaking. If you have any problems, just let me know.

[Not long after that, B'Elanna can be found in one of the Battle Dome rooms with her Voyager program running. She's sitting at her station in Main Engineering, looking at the warp core in distant thought.]

It wasn't exactly my choice to be on Voyager. Not that I hate it there or anything, but... being stuck on the same ship for however many years it takes to get home isn't what I had in mind for my life.

How'd you end up on Voyager, then? Transfer?

[snapturtle]

[She sighs, wondering where to begin with this.]

I'm not actually with Starfleet. I'm a Maquis. Our ship was pulled into the Delta Quadrant, and Voyager soon after.

Long story short, we had to destroy our ship. So we all went to Voyager and became a part of the crew. We've been traveling with them for the past three years, trying to get home.

And...who are the Maquis?

[snapturtle]

A resistance group. We're fighting against a race called the Cardassians. Starfleet considers us rebels.

[thefinaljedi]

And what sort of beings are these...Cardassians?

[Inter-species fighting is an all but foreign concept to Luke. Wookies and Trandoshans have their blood feud, but the struggle for them has always been with political bodies made up of all races. Xenophobia is a concept reserved for...well...typically for cyborgs and droids instead of specific sapient races.]

[snapturtle]

[Are you sure you want to open that can of worms, Luke? Her eyes flash with indignant anger. Not at Luke of course, but the topic.]

They're murderers, barbaric and cruel. And the Federation decided to make treaties with them and hand over some of the colonies. Colonies that were our homes.

[thefinaljedi]

The whole species?

[Luke sounds genuinely surprised.]

[snapturtle]

Yes. The whole damn species.

[She says that with quite a bit of gusto and anger.]

[thefinaljedi]

[He doesn't want to press, but he can't really believe that.

So, subject change.]

Are most groups in your galaxy still maintaining borders and empires based on genetics?

[snapturtle]

[It isn't, but B'Elanna has a thorough hatred from Cardassians. She wouldn't trust one as far as she could throw them. But anyway... the subject change is probably a good idea, even if that's a bit of an odd question.]

If you mean species, yes, many do. They have their own territories and borders. But then you have the Federation which is an alliance of several different worlds and species.

Unusual.

[It's hard for him to think outside of something as vast as the Republic, really.]

How many race and worlds make up the Federation?

[snapturtle]

Formally? ... Over a hundred and fifty members. Last we knew, anyway.

[A lot can happen in three years.]

[thefinaljedi]

And do you think these other races will join with time? The...Klingons? And Romulans?

[Spock and Bones had explained about those two, though Cardassians are new.]

[snapturtle]

I doubt it. The Klingon Empire is at peace with the Federation, but they like being their own entity. And the Romulans... heh. There have been tensions between them and the Federation for a long time.

If it ever happens, I don't see it happening any time soon.

[thefinaljedi]

A pity. Unity is what brought peace to my galaxy, ultimately. And the technology we have, too.

[snapturtle]

Unity? You mean to tell me that all the species and worlds in your galaxy came together in peace? I find that hard to believe.

[thefinaljedi]

Is it? Because that's what happened. There are still individuals who have issues with other species, and some species are less open to outsiders, but by and large interspecies conflict is limited to individuals and not governments.

[Extra-stellar threats aside.]

[snapturtle]

Well I can tell you that won't happen any time soon in our galaxy. We can't even get from one end of it to the other within the span of a human lifetime, much less make peace with all the worlds and species we haven't even met yet. And even if we could, there's still many hostile races. Like the Kazon, and the Vidiians, and the Borg. Our galaxy isn't exactly the little utopia that yours seems to be.

Ours is hardly a utopia, B'Ellana. The Republic has been fighting a war with the Imperial Remnant for a decade now, but all races are represented on both sides. And then there's extra-galactic threats. We've been invaded twice from outside the galaxy.

Still, once we get out of here...maybe we'll be able to figure out a way to link realities and share technology somehow.

[snapturtle]

So your Republic and Imperial Remnant have some of every species on their side? ... Sounds like a mess.

[B'Elanna never liked politics. She'd rather spend her time replacing bioneural gel packs rather than sit in on any diplomatic discussions.]

Maybe. But I'm not getting my hopes up.

[thefinaljedi]

Yes, though admittedly the Empire is human-centric in terms of their military. And it is a mess. Believe me, I leave the politics to my twin.

[snapturtle]

Can't say that I blame you.

[Wait.]

You have a twin?

[thefinaljedi]

I do. Leia Organa...Solo. She's actually here, along with her future husband Han Solo. Though...they aren't married in her timeline.

[Fuck timelines, B'Ellana.]

[snapturtle]

... Right.

[She completely understands the timeline thing. Cause she's living with two guys from decades ago... except not? Alternate reality stuff. She has to agree with Captain Janeway that temporal paradoxes are just a headache.]
